Balls to Overs Converter

Balls to Overs Converter

Convert a count of legal deliveries into completed overs and cricket notation. An over is six legal balls.

Count only legal deliveries. Wides and no-balls do not advance the over.

Formula

  • Completed Overs = Total Legal Balls / 6, rounded down
  • Remaining Balls = Total Legal Balls modulo 6

Example

  • 106 legal balls.
  • 106 / 6 = 17 complete overs with 4 balls left over.
  • Written in cricket notation that is 17.4 overs.

Frequently asked questions

Does 17.4 overs mean seventeen and four tenths?

No. The digit after the point counts balls, not tenths. 17.4 means 17 completed overs plus 4 balls. Only the digits 0 to 5 can appear after the point.

When is the decimal figure used instead?

Rate calculations such as run rate and economy rate divide by true decimal overs, which is the ball count divided by six. For 106 balls that is 17.67, not 17.4.

Why convert balls to overs?

Scorers, apps and statistics often count legal balls, but scorecards show overs in cricket notation, where the number after the point is balls, not tenths of an over. This converter turns a ball count into the overs figure you would see on a scorecard, and also shows the decimal value used in calculations.

Common ball counts with the overs figure a scorecard shows and the decimal used for run rate and economy. For any other count, divide by 6: the whole number is the overs and the remainder is the balls.

45 balls

7 overs and 3 balls, written 7.3.
